The only factor which might have triggered this transformation (that I can think of), is a Colonoscopy performed October 17. The nurses had to help me with the unpleasant preparation of cleaning out my colon. For that I spent the night before the operation in the clinic. Fortunately. There is no way I could have done that at home. In the USA apparently colonoscopies are frequently done after a certain age to reduce the incidence of colon cancer. Not so in France. My French Gastro-enterologist said that since this policy of routine colonoscopies had been introduced, the incidence of colon cancer in the USA had been reduced by 30%. He thinks the French should follow suit. In my case it was recommended because of high incidence of colon cancer in my father’s family.
I hesitated having it done (yuk) so I consulted the ancient Chinese divination the I Ching. Everyone who uses the I Ching swears by it. Not to be consulted for trivial matters, it always gives well taken, ethical advice, though sometimes the symbolism may be difficult to understand. The Hexagram I received was "Molting, Revolution". I received it not once, but twice.
What could that mean ? I think it refers to the de-contamination of the Large Intestine which, like a snake shedding its old skin, can lead to a re-birth. Much is revealed in the scientific research linking a healthy « gut » to a healthy immune system, healthy nervous system. What if years of toxic chemicals, especially antibiotics, had penetrated the walls of my intestine to continue to poison me and that by purging the large intestine (which in my case was revealed to be exceptionally long.) I had been reborn ?
During my first healing 1984-85 the Intestines WERE purged. After 6 months of detoxification, diet transformation, and supplements I went through a period of diarrhia which delighted my Kinesiologist/Naturopath precisely because it suggested a purging of toxins. (After awhile my acupuncture Dr wasn’t so pleased, he prescribed herbs to stop it.) Thereafter my Intestines performed optimally for the first time in my life.***
Gradually the improvement receded as I cheated on the diet and took antibiotics for cystitus. The stress of divorce and the fearful stress of my move to France coupled with diet change probably marked a new epoch in Intestinal poisoning, and parallel upsurge in MS symptoms. Let’s say the recent colonoscopy cleared out toxins which have built up over 30 years. I won’t do it again. If I can arrive at the age of 70 without a single polype, and can continue on my healthy diet, supplements and lifestyle I can assume I won’t have intestinal problems in the future.
One happy note. As I was lying just outside the operating theater, two nurses looking over my medical file were amazed to note my age. « She doesn’t look like she is 70, more like 60, NO, more like 50. She doesn’t have any wrinkles ! » They asked what I did to arrive at this exceptional condition? » As the anethesiologist poked me with the needle, he commented that I must have a positive attitude. That may be a factor, but in truth I eat well and take custom prescribed supplements and use homeopathy and am treated periodically with fluid circulation therapies (osteopathy, acupuncture, massage.) I follow the healing protocol one can find here on this site under « My Seven Steps to MS Healing ». I look like I’m in stellar health, people assume my partially paralysed right side was caused by a one time event, either a stroke or an accident, but not an ongoing « auto-immune disease ». I couldn’t quickly offer that explanation to the nurses so I just agreed with the Doctor, perhaps a positive attitude.
I might have known my « happiness » would be short lived. My colon was treated in clinic October 17. I think I wrote the above around November 10, three plus weeks later. Pain began to develop in my gum on the right side of my face three weeks after that. At first I thought it was a cold sore. Then when swelling developed I thought it might be a plugged sinus, I didn’t even think teeth because the pain and swelling seemed too far distant from the tooth (and the teeth didn’t hurt.) I chewed Standard Process supplements Cataplex A-C, Collagen C and a Chlorophyll pearl as well as a Calcium-Magnesium tablet. In the past this recipe was successful in treating infection. Saturday the neighbors noticed the swelling, Sunday it had subsided, but by Monday it was worse and by Wednesday the pain excruciating. Tuesday my Osteopath pinpointed the infection site, saying it wasn’t the sinus which is located much higher. I thought I would wait to visit my Dentist in Paris when we returned North on Friday, but he was at a training conference all week. By chance I already had an appointment scheduled with him for Monday, December 3. So I would just have to wait. When I stopped by the village Pharmacy to fetch Advil, the Pharmacist was appalled by my swollen face and he insisted I get some antbiotics to see me through to Monday. I called the village MD who had me drop by to pick up a prescription. So that evening I began taking Spiramycine/Métronidazole twice a day for 5 days, the fifth day corresponding to my dental appointment.
My village Doctor (and Pharmacist) saved the day. The antibiotic medication began to work at once. I’ve never before had an abscessed tooth. The Pain ! I suppose it could be compared to Shingles. What did people do in the past ? I’m not a fan of anti-biotics, but I’m not stupid either.
Monday Decembers 3 I visited my Dentist in Paris. He took an X-Ray of the upper back molars to discover that the tooth second from the back was infected. In fact this was my one and only root canal.
There is a story behind this root canal. I had all my teeth before this incident. Sometime in the 1980’s my San Francisco Dentist very blithely announced I needed a new crown on that tooth. His new young colleague would treat it. I thought to myself « I don’t need this, he is just making work for Dr. S. » However, I obediently went along with the program and the crown was replaced. From the beginning I thought the crown didn’t fit, it was too tight and hurt. After awhile the pain was intense enough that I returned to the Dentist to be told that the tooth was infected and that I needed a root canal. That antibiotics couldn’t treat the infection. At first I tried to treat the infection with the Standard Process supplements mentioned above, but that didn’t work so I gave in and had the tooth de-vitalised by an endodentist who performed the « root canal » and a new crown was installed.
In France before fitting a crown the tooth is always de-vitalised, a root canal in other words. My French Dentist was amazed that all my crowned teeth, save one, were « alive ». I have 8 crowns and over recent years he has replaced four, but I refuse to let him devitalise the tooth before installing the crown, even though when one drills the tooth there exists the risk of « killing » it (as happened in San Francisco.) I believe it a mistake to kill the tooth, thereafter blood no longer irrigates the area and the bones disintegrate. And in fact the bone tissue surrounding the tooth in question was degraded, he wanted to send me to a tooth implant specialist to get a 3-D picture to determine the state of the bone tissue which would determine if he could « save » the tooth. If it could be salvaged he wanted to send me to an endodentist to clean out the root canal and install a new one after which it would be crowned.
I decided to have it pulled. My intuition warned me that this tooth would always be infected, would give me trouble, I wanted it out. I wasn’t going to compound my original mistake by making another.
My poor Dentist was traumatised to pull it out. He always seeks to save the tooth. He had a terrible time. Being « dead » the tooth broke into pieces, he pulled and pulled on the last leg. I thought it would never come out. Afterwards he declared that I was « radical ». Usually I ask that he drill my teeth without anesthetic, but of course this time he deadened the area beforehand, I may be « radical » but I’m not crazy. I really suffered very little discomfort afterwards. For Homeopathic treatment took 3 grains of Arnica, 3 of Gelsemium and 3 of my foundation remedies Pulsatilla and Phosphorus. (I also use Rayon X 12ch when I get an X-Ray.) And I rubbed the German homeopathic cream Traumeel on the cheek. I bought it on the Intenet. It’s an incredible remedy one can buy in health food stores in the USA and I suffered absolutely no swelling. (Actually, I think it’s the swelling that causes the intense pain.)
To finish the story of my San Francisco Dentist, my Kinesiologist recommended I have the amalgam « mercury » fillings removed. There have been numerous cases where removal of the mercury alone has « cured » MS in some people.
So I asked the young San Francisco Dentist to begin replacing the amalgam with composite. Except he wasn’t very careful about removing the mercury from my mouth, I was being poisoned further. I very angrily told him he needed to be more aware of my overall health, I didn’t need a « tooth mechanic ». So he fired me as a patient. My friend Michael said it was I who fired him. This is just as well, I began to visit a « naturopathic » Dentist in Richmond who specialized in removing Amalgam fillings. He also wanted to replace my crowns thinking the metal bases were composed of Nickel. I declined. Everytime one drills a tooth one risks « killing » it, therefore a root canal. (And eventually a tooth implant ? I have the impression there are far more teeth implants in France than in the USA, probably the result of devitalising the teeth before crowning them.)
An interesting thought. I wonder if this tooth crisis was triggered by the large intestine colonoscopy treatment performed mid-October? The entry point of the large intestine meridien is at the outside of the nostril and runs down roughly over the area of the abscessed tooth. Maybe an influence. Of course the infection had probably been festering a long time. Apparently if the crown does not fit well, microbes can contaminate the canal to infect it. So maybe removal of this chronic infection will lead to another « Revolution ».
December 12 I was treated by an excellent Acupuncturist. He ordered herbs for me, saying my Yin and Chi (basic energy) were very depleted. This must certainly be true, I am weak, last week feared my legs would fail me. I’m feeling better today, Dec 16, but hopefully his herbs will give me a boost and help overcome the winter gloom. His treatment also relieved lingering pain around the upper lip.
Anyway, it’s discouraging to realize that even though I do my best to stay healthy, what could I have done better to avoid this tooth infection ? (Well, I should have listened to my instinct in 1985).
So, I ingested anti-biotics for 2.5 weeks. Not good. My tongue is coated again, black in the middle, which suggests a Candida proliferation.. All that effort cleaning out my « gut » appears to have been canceled out. Result ? Very low energy. But I had no choice. As Bette Davis famously declared, « Getting old ain’t for sissies » That’s for sure, who needs it ?
Just a cautionary tale. My general advice is to heed that inner voice. Take care of yourself. Have confidence in yourself. When necessary, be « Radical ».

Focus on the gut-brain axis: Multiple sclerosis, the intestinal barrier and the microbiome.

Abstract
The brain-gut axis serves as the bidirectional connection between the gut microbiome, the intestinal barrier and the immune system that might be relevant for the pathophysiology of inflammatory demyelinating diseases. People with multiple sclerosis have been shown to have an altered microbiome, increased intestinal permeability and changes in bile acid metabolism. Experimental evidence suggests that these changes can lead to profound alterations of peripheral and central nervous system immune regulation. Besides being of pathophysiological interest, the brain-gut axis could also open new avenues of therapeutic targets. Modification of the microbiome, the use of probiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation, supplementation with bile acids and intestinal barrier enhancers are all promising candidates. Hopefully, pre-clinical studies and clinical trials will soon yield significant results.

A bad gut leads to a deficient methylation/failure of epigenetic regulation and cellular expression.
The cross reaction of endothelial cells with B cells leads to a biochemical reaction which in turn leads to elevated peroxynitrite and mounting oxidative stress at cellular level.
