Early September 2014 I developed a virulent bladder infection for which I took a five day course of Noroxin (which I had on hand). I nonetheless took a urine sample to the lab AFTER I had begun taking the antibiotic and was told the antibiotic would have temporarily killed the bacteria to cause a false negative. The results were nonetheless interesting. Leucocytes 520,000/ml. Hematies 27,000/ml. That is to say, an acute inflammation.
The burning symptoms in the bladder returned as the infection went into a chronic stage. I was in the country and requested from my local treating physician an introductory letter to a classical Homeopath who I knew lived nearby. (That in itself is real luck because classical homeopaths are rare in France and to find one next door was well nigh miraculous.) I told my Doctor, a lady friend, that I needed to get these infections under control through homeopathy, that repeated antibiotics weren’t the solution.
The Homeopath Dr. M prescribed Iodion (from Iodine) in a low dose (5 Ch), 3 grains morning and evening for 15 days.. I admit I thought the low dose wouldn’t do it, and it didn’t. He also recommended I take 1 grain of Staphysagria 30 Ch should I feel the infection had returned. (I had been using Staphysagria since the beginning of the infection which seemed to correspond to my emotional state at the outset.) He also recommended I take 1 Tablespoon of Algue (seaweed) per day, considering this natural iodine to be an ideal healing substance.
Well, all this didn’t “work”. My next appointment 3 weeks later I didn’t hide my vexation. I think he was used to getting positive results merely by his authoritative manner. What was needed was a remedy which corresponded to the totality of symptoms and I felt he hadn’t really studied my case. He seemed a bit off balance. He prescribed a urinalysis to determine the germ. If the germ was E-Coli (the most common bladder infection germ, though for years I had had anything but E-Coli) he prescribed serum anti-colibacillinum 5 Ch – 3 grains 3 times a day as well as 30Ch doses 1 dose a week.for 4 weeks. If another germ Capsicum 9 Ch 3 weeks supply and Equisetum 9 Ch 3 weeks supply (3 grains 3 times a day.) The urinalysis of December 2, 2014 revealed that the germ was indeed Escherichia Coli > à 1.000.000 /ml. The inflammation had been reduced since the September analysis to 242,000/ml < à 10.000 Leucocytes and 3,000/ml < à 10.000 Hematies. But the infection persisted. So I followed his protocol for the E. Coli but it still didn’t work.
He wanted me to continue with the homeopathy which he adjusted slightly given the lab results. Serum anti-collibacillinum 5 CH grains, Staphysagria 30 CH grains and Colibacillinum 4 doses. (I’m not giving full details and my spelling may be off because I can’t read the Rx.. He also prescribed “Soluté iodo-ioduré fort dit de Lugol, - Iodure de potassium, Iode metalloide and water q.s. ad – an Iodine solution intended to boost my immunity which I was to take indefinitely.)
Early January one morning I was lying peacefully in bed talking to a friend in San Francisco. Once off the telephone I abruptly threw myself off the bed to find I couldn’t breathe. I grasped my chest to try to breathe, three strangled breathes and then things returned to normal. It occurred to me I had had some kind of heart “event.” After that I felt as though I had some broken glass in my chest. It occurred to me that by rising so abruptly the circulatory system had collapsed and blood hadn’t reached my heart for a few seconds. If CCSVI implies damaged veins and the endothelium might not the arteries be affected as well? So since then I am very careful to rise slowly from a prone position to allow the blood to flow normally as I get up. Nonetheless I requested a reference from Dr. M to a Cardiologist who I would visit on April 16.
January 20, 2015 I visited Dr. M again to say I still had the bladder infection. We decided I should take an antibiotic, this had gone on too long. I was to take the one dose Monoril on January 21, a second sachet on Jan 23 and a third on 4 February if necessary. ,
A clarification. Normally I live in the country during the summer months and Paris during the winter. Exceptionally we spent the winter in our country home which is lovely but difficult and expensive to heat. So I was cold all winter. In Chinese medicine it is said that cold “injures” the kidneys (which represent the body’s major defense meridian.) Needless to say, the cold didn’t support my immune system nor help heal the bladder infections. I’m now in Paris enjoying the warm, cozy apartment. I don’t think we will try living in the country again during the coldest winter months.
Back to my story. Unfortunately when we decided I should begin taking an antibiotic just then I was fighting off – successfully – a virus. I was using the Boiron homeopathic remedy Oscillococcinum. Dr. M told me that the well known, highly respected French Homeopathic company Boiron was under presure from its shareholders (I’m not one) to concentrate solely on the Oscillococcinum because it is so profitable. If it’s so successful, that’s because it WORKS. If one is unable to head off the virus completely, at least its effects are mitigated. At the first symptom I take a dose. If symptoms persist a second dose, maximum 2 doses a day for 3 days. The cost is minimal (maybe $7 for the 3 day treatment.) During the winter flu season one can take 1 dose a week as a preventive measure.
Homeopathic treatment is very inexpensive. One tube of 80 grains (at 9 grains a day this will last 9 days) costs 1.05 Euros. There is however, one big drawback. Remedies can be easily antidoted by allopathic medicine. (For some both coffee and mint should be avoided during treatment as well.) I antidoted successful homeopathic treatment twice this winter to very unfortunate results.
Late January the Oscillococcinum had kept the virus at bay until the antibiotic Monuril for the bladder infection completely antidoted it. While my bladder felt relief, my entire body seemed to seize up into muscle spasms because of the virus. I feared being unable to walk. So even though the Monuril had relieved the bladder pain, no way would I take the repeat dose. Since the Oscillococcinum had been rendered useless, once off the antibiotic I tried one of Boirons compositions Coryzalia. (used for colds, runny nose.) Their compositions are made up of remedies at the very low dose of 3 Ch. I at once felt that something in the composition was of help and decided it was Pulsatilla. So I began to take a 15 Ch Pulsatilla, which helped enormously, and then moved up to 30 Ch. (In France one can buy Homeopathy without a Prescription up to the 30 Ch concentration.) Right off I knew the remedy was correct because my mood changed from “down in the dumps gloomy” to “let’s see what project I should tackle today”. I recovered fairly rapidly after that. The muscle cramps ceased and with the brief neck/back massages performed by my husband I recovered. (I was also being treated once a month by an excellent Osteopath who kept the cerebrospinal fluids and brain blood circulating.)
But the painful, chronic bladder infection returned. My next appointment with Dr M was on February 9. I told him what had happened, that I felt Pulsatilla was my foundation remedy. I asked how my myriad symptoms corresponded to this remedy (dry mouth, for example) and he agreed Pulsatilla appeared to be the answer. However, I didn’t know what dosage to take for best effect. He prescribed 5 doses of Pulsatilla 30 Ch to be taken at one week intervals, for at least 2 weeks, up to 5 weeks as needed. He also gave me the name of a Cardiologist, though it would be up to my treating physician to write the letter of reference. So I began the weekly Pulsatilla treatment on February 10.
On February 20 I visited my Generalist. She was surprised when I asserted that it was better for me with MS to live with a chronic bladder infection than to catch a virus that would hamper Central Nervous system fluid circulation leading to MS symptoms. She did prescribe the antibiotic Céfixime (Oroken) to which the germ was shown to be sensitive on the urinalysis. I kept it just in case. But mainly I had to be sure I wasn’t fighting off a virus before taking the antibiotic.
After 3 weeks of weekly Pulsatilla 30 Ch doses I saw my Osteopath again. He was visibly amazed that my body had become so relaxed and supple. I told him the big change must be due to the homeopathy. I continued the once a week doses until my next visit with Dr M. on March 17. I asked him if he thought I should try the low dose Naltrexone. He used a pendulum to determine the dose (3 mg) He also decided to increase the Pulsatilla dose to 200K for which I needed a prescription.
The Naltrexone was my idea obtained from the Thisisms.com website. It apparently helps some people (it is used to detox alcoholics in the standard dose. Maybe it helps detox MSers in the lower dose.) I believe for me it was a mistake. The horrible taste reminded me of hospitals, of needles attached to tubes, of all the misery hospital visits imply. The bitter taste itself wasn’t the issue (believe me Chinese herbs are bitter), it was the taste of hospitals and death which completely threw me off. So I think I antidoted the homeopathy. I took the Pulsatilla 200K dose later that same day, but either the death taste was still there, or the 200K dose was inappropriate. (Dr. M has since returned me to the 30 Ch dose level.)
My husband came down with the flu on Saturday March 21, and by Tuesday March 24 I was struck down. I took the 3 days of Oscillococcinum which seemed to mitigate the ill effects of the virus. This was a vicious flu which led to a high fever for 4 days and then sent victims to the hospital unable to breathe. My fever was mild, lasting only a day, I really wasn’t that bad off. Then my husband visited the Generalist (for the both of us) who prescribed on March 27 Paracetamol, Acetylcysteine and Miflonil. The Miflonil is a Cortisone capsule inserted into a small plastic apparatus from which one breathes in, much like treatment for an asthmatic. It does help people who can’t breathe, but for me it was a terrible mistake. By this time my bladder had entirely recovered and I was getting over the flu rather quickly. I delayed taking the cortisone but finally my husband insisted. (What I really needed was good old fashioned “ventouse’ or cupping to relieve the stress. I attached the TENS pads to my chest and the electrical stimulation seemed to relieve the tension.) The Cortisone antidoted all the homeopathy ( Oscilloccinuum and the Pulsatilla.) On April 2 the Osteopath was very upset to see my tensed up condition.
The Cortisone was a TERRIBLE MISTAKE for me. When I next visited Dr M he too was shocked at my sorry condition, saying I wasn’t the same person as he had seen at my previous visit. He said I had a strong intuition which I should develop using the pendulum. (My naturopath in California uses it for me now when I call her since I can’t visit her for the muscle testing. But her advice during the last tele-conference didn’t work, there is too much distance between us since I last saw her. Of course the pendulum is an unorthodox technique, but if it helps me consolidate my intuition, which worked recently so well with the Pulsatilla, I might as well try. That doesn’t means I can forego visits with the Homeopath (or the acupuncturist or osteopath).
On April 16 I visited the Cardiologist who did an electrocardiogram as well as another examination. Apparently the heart is normal, the problem lies in the Aorta. She completely ignored me when I spoke of the CCSVI blood circulation theory of MS. She ordered a “Scintigraphie myocardique” examination at the hospital for June 6. (Heart scintigraphy).
I looked this up on Wikipedia. “Scintigraphy ("scint," Latin scintilla, spark) is a form of diagnostic test used in nuclear medicine, wherein radioisotopes are taken internally (via radiopharmaceuticals) and the emitted radiation is captured by external detectors (gamma cameras) to form two-dimensional[1] images. In contrast, SPECT and positron emission tomography (PET) form 3-dimensional images, and are therefore classified as separate techniques to scintigraphy, although they also use gamma cameras to detect internal radiation. Scintigraphy is unlike a diagnostic X-ray where external radiation is passed through the body to form an image. »
Heart: “Pre- and post-stress thallium may indicate areas that will benefit from myocardial revascularization. Redistribution indicates the existence of coronary steal and the presence of ischemic coronary artery disease.[4] “
The very idea of injecting a radioisotope into my body made my heart sink. If a simple antibiotic antidotes the homeopathy, what will the emitted radiation do? And I don’t think it is necessary, I think I know what happened and know I just need to avoid abrupt movements which can “collapse” the circulatory system around my heart. Also, the Doctor was dismissive and arrogant, didn’t listen to me and explained nothing at all.
On April 21 I enjoyed an outstanding acupuncture treatment by an osteopath/acupuncturist upon our return to Paris. He performs a classical diagnosis by looking at the tongue and very carefully takes the 12 pulses. He asked if I had night sweats (yes, since the flu I would wake up wet as a mop.) He said these sweats were very harmful because they bleed the minerals out of the body. I described my heart “attack” as well as how the cortisone had knocked me flat. He analysed the deleterious effect of the cortisone in terms of Chinese medical theory, the extreme separation of the fire element (heart) and water element (kidney/bladder). I can’t reproduce what he said but it made sense. He said that for most people the cortisone could be better tolerated but my system was very out of balance. The treatment lasted a full hour, he didn’t let me leave until my pulses indicated the imbalance had been overcome. He also recommended I return in a month if I hadn’t fully recovered. (I’m already much better after dragging around like a dead person for nearly a month.)
The following day I had my once a year appointment with my Gynecologist. She is a Young, dynamic, open minded woman with whom it is a pleasure to converse. She finds the CCSVI theory of MS to be plausible and takes an interest in its development. She studied the Electrocardiogram recently done by the Cardiologist. I told her the cardiologist had concluded that the aorta was at issue. I wondered if this problem was another aspect of defective endothelium and blood circulation. I asked her what the proposed “scintigraphie myocardique” was. She said the electrocardiogram was normal, the heart wasn’t at issue. She reflected a bit and then said “You don”t have to do it” meaning the examination.. She didn’t understand why the rush. She assured me I didn’t have to do it. I was SO relieved.
We both looked at the most recent urinalyses.
April 8, 2015 Leucocytes 4,500/mm3, Hematies 3/mm3. Germ Escherichia coli: 1.000.000/mL
April 15, 2015 Leucocytes 558/mm3, Hematies 7/mm3. Culture Positive, Escherichia coli: 100,000 /ml.
In other words the homeopathy Pulsatilla which I had resumed taking after stopping the Cortisone appeared to be ridding me of the bladder infection. Even so I began to take the antibiotic on April 17 for an 8 day course. I probably could have eliminated the germ without it. But I’m now certain to be free of infection. The Gynecologist prescribed “Orogyn”, a treatment to rebalance the intestinal and vaginal “flore” - “Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus crispatus”
For those who need real black and white lab results (and not this touchy feely intuition rubbish) I think the above urinalysis lab results should be of interest. (The second one was done because the first was initially misplaced.)
These results reminded me of a bladder infection I had maybe 15 years ago. The urinalysis test strips were positive for infection, the Leucocytes purple, the Nitrites dark pink. The recommended remedy then was Causticum. By the following day the bladder infection symptoms had subsided and when I redid the test strips I was surprised to find results were negative – no infection. This implies there are objectively verifiable ways to test the efficacy of homeopathy. The prescribed remedies can’t be studied through a double blind protocol because they will be as varied as the person infected, the remedy being chosen to boost the immunity symptoms which eliminate the pathogen.
Why have I indulged in this long discussion? I have realized I absolutely must be assured of a classical homeopath. Should Dr M retire, I will go through the Hahneman clinic in Paris. I have found Osteopaths in Paris and the country. I have a good acupuncturist in Paris but no longer in the country so I have to find one, ALTHOUGH a good massage therapist might do just as well. One must work with what one can find. I should perhaps try to find a Chiropractor who uses a Cox table to relieve pressure on my spinal cord and cerebrospinal fluid. I still order Standard Process supplements through my Naturopath in San Francisco, but some day may be unable to do so. Probably I should seek out a kinesiologist in Paris (they didn’t exist in France when I first arrived.) I suggested a Kinesiologist in Brussels by writing this on the Thisisms.com. website in April 2015.
“Hello Leonard :
You have a potentially valuable therapeutic resource right next to Brussels (Rixansart?) which might help you (or anyone else interested) Mid 1980’s my San Francisco Kinesiologist Dr Jimmy Scott gave courses for Dr. Dominique Monette and I see she is still associated with Kinesiology at l’IBK at Rixansart. (Info on Internet.) The advantage of muscle testing for diet, food intolerances etc is that theoretically one can have a custom diet/supplement regime worked out specific to your needs. When Dr Scott determined my “allergies” (food intolerances if you like) ideal diet and supplements, I was horrified. “this guy’s a quack” was my first thought. But then what he suggested couldn’t hurt me so I tried it. He said it would take 5 days to detox from food intolerances and the first few days were really like going through drug withdrawal. After 5 days I felt lighter and better and I was VERY lucky because I had been suffering from a right eye vision problem which disappeared after going off glutens etc. Then it returned when I took antibiotics, but since has never returned. So I had an immediate benefit. It took 6 months for my intestines to clear out and a year for the MS damage to heal. (I was young and healing more likely.) I think it is a mistake to ignore nutrition and supplements and launch right into chemotherapy etc. What if EBV/Mononucleosis damages the veins in a growing child, and later it re-activates because of low oxygen due to poor blood circulation?
Anyway, I suggest this resource because it is right next to you. You might find someone who can at least help you think through your personal needs rather than wander blindly through the theoretical.”
One other thing. I’m not going to ignore the heart/Aorta issue. I intend to see a lady Angiologue here in Paris who performed a Sonogram on my jugulars and vertebral veins early 2011. I want to ask her opinion on the aorta as well as to learn the status of CCSVI treatment in France. Is it realistic to think that my heart “event” is just another manifestation of weakened blood vessels? She too was open to new ideas and seemed willing to discuss things. If I undergo the Scintigraphy I’ll wait until the autumn rather than spoil my summer.
I realize I’ve written better blog entries but I’ll post this anyway to re-launch myself. Regards.
P.S. I have been SO tired I thought I would never recover. All I needed was a massage, I'm like new. I didn't need anything more complicated than that.
